from The RFU
As you may know, we have been working to update the current RFU First Aid course. Following demand from the game we have introduced a greater element of "rugby specific" training to the course, which adds a large value to the RFU course over others pitched to volunteers within the game. To avoid the course becoming overly lengthy as a result, these rugby specific training scenarios and some useful background information have been developed as a pre-course module by our contacts at UCLAN who have licensed STA to incorporate this module into our qualification.
Other considerations were: • The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have changed the criteria for basic first aid training - this increases the content and teaching time for attendees. • People involved in the game, need training that is rugby-specific and which gives them the skills to work pitch-side rather than simply in the workplace • The amount of time and money volunteers have to spend on courses is limited • The course must be of a sufficient standard to meet Emergency First aid at Work (EFAW) requirements. This will not only provide reassurance of a quality training product and accredited tutors, but also provide volunteers with a nationally recognised qualification that is transferable to the workplace, other sports or can be credited towards a larger qualification.
We have addressed all of these and as such launched the new RFU Emergency First Aid Course on the 1st February: • The face-to-face training remains as a one-day course, 6 hours in length • Pre-course learning material will be accessed online for everyone registered on a course. (This addresses extra rugby and pitch-side specific knowledge) • Hard-copy manuals will still be produced for reference after the course. • RFU requirements regarding concussion regulations and injury reporting procedures will be included • The course is on the LSC framework (level 2) and as such is eligible for local authority funding • The cost has been kept to a minimum at £65 which is very competitive when compared with other national providers: (Red cross £95-£135, St John Ambulance ~£70 but varies widely by region, CM Training £100)

To help us keep costs down, online registration has been introduced. Courses will also need a minimum of 10 people (the maximum number allowed is 12 limited by HSE regulation).
Course booking procedure: • Clubs, Schools, Colleges or RFU staff can register courses as now, (preferably by e-mail to katw@sta.co.uk ) • Individual candidates will then go online (through www.rfu.com/firstaid ), select a course and register and pay online; this can either be done individually or in bulk. • Once candidates have registered and paid they will be issued via email an access code for the precourse learning module. • This module MUST be completed and a certificate printed off before their face-to-face course takes place. They will not be able to pass the course without this certificate being examined by the course tutor. • If the candidate successfully completes the pre-course learning and the face-to-face training then a certificate will be automatically issued in the following few weeks. • Individuals will then be automatically registered on Rugby First as having completed the RFU Emergency First Aid course. If you have any questions, comments or feedback please email karenhood@rfu.com .
Leaflets and posters will be sent out to the game in the next two weeks supported by Touchline articles.
