Sussex Trophy History

The Sussex Trophy Knockouts started in 1970 when the magnificent silver trophy, was presented by Vice Presidents of Lewes RFC, the first winners were Brighton FC (RFU).  During the 70's and 80's, Lewes dominated the Competition and have appeared in 20 finals, winning 12. Their reign was ended by Haywards Heath who won six times running from 1995 and again in 2003. Worthing, having won 5 times in the 80's, and once in the 90's, also won 5 out of 6 years from 2002.

Over 38 years, only 10 different Clubs have won the Trophy.    Lewes have 12 wins,  Worthing have 11, Haywards Heath 7, Crawley, Horsham and Crowborough have won twice, whilst Brighton, Bognor, Chichester and East Grinstead have one win each.  In 2007, it was decided that Clubs at level 5, it would  enter their Second XV, to preserve an element of Competition

Club Competitions

IMPORTANT NOTICE

BOTH teams in Senior cup matches to send Ken Nichols their Match Card by the following Wednesday OR e-mail the same to me,of their game.

Last season a couple of the losing teams did not bother, and although they got an away fixture unbeknown to them this year, with the arrival of the so called bigger teams back in the Sussex cups, feel more clubs will be interested in which XV turns out against them in the 'lower' cups making sure they have not appeared in a higher match.

This applies to all Senior Cup Matches within Sussex i.e. Plate, Shield, Bob Roger's Cup and Trophy. Junior Cup Matches are already covered with heinous penalties for those not returning cards by the due time.

Competed for by Club First XV's (Level 5 and above enter 2nd XV's)

Team Competitions

Competed for by Teams below First XV level

Sussex RFU was one of the first CB's to recognise the importance of giving every team, in every club, the opportunity of competing in a Knockout Competition, as well as their regular League fixtures.    The 'Team' competitions for all Teams below First XV has proved to be very popular and the Cup Finals are among the most entertaining and competitive
