Rugby World Cup Year 8 Tournament 2011 - 'England' (aka St. Philip Howard School) Winners

Rugby World Cup Yr 8 Tournament

On October 13th Bognor RFC played host to a Yr 8 Boys Rugby World Cup Tournament. The event was run by RFU Community Rugby Coaches Mike Marsh and Mick Orton, and was supported by West Sussex West School Sport Partnership as well as Bognor Rugby Club.

All the schools who took part were allocated a country to represent throughout the Tournament:

·          Wales - Felpham CC

·          England - St. Philip Howard

·          New Zealand - The Regis School

·          Australia - Bourne CC

After some fiercely competitive matches with a great display of Rugby from all teams taking part, the England (St. Philip Howard) team finished as winners. Great credit must go to St. Philip Howard and Adam Collyer as they not only scored some superb tries, but also were the only school throughout the afternoon to not concede any points!

World Cup fever comes to Town !!!!

More than 150 Year 5 and 6 pupils from 11 local primary schools took part in World Cup tag rugby festivals at Bognor and Chichester Rugby Clubs.

Each school entered as a World Cup nation which led to a multitude of colours, flags, and facepaints across the two events.
To kick off, the teams took part in a parade to a soundtrack of the national anthems and after some patriotic singing, as well as the haka being performed by pupils from Rose Green School, the players took part in a series of tag rugby practices delivered by leadership academystudents from The Regis School and Chichester College.

Next the future rugby stars took part in a number of matches played at various mock RWC stadiums such as Eden Park and the Cake Tin

Matches were refereed by the academy students and a great attitude of fair-play among all countries. Teachers from Laburnham Grove and Seal Primary School were among those to praise the event and those who made it happen.

The event was suppoorted by RFU Community Rugby Coach Mike Marsh , WSW school sport organiser Sean O'Connor and PE sport strategy manager Kate Smith

Sussex Yazoo Tag Rugby Finals

The Yazoo County Tag Rugby Finals took place on Wednesday May 25th at Horsham RFC. There were 17 schools taking part, from across all 9 School Sport Partnerships. The finals were run by RFU Community Rugby Coaches, supported by volunteers as part of the nationwide V-Rugby project, and referees from across Sussex.

Throughout the afternoon the standard of Tag Rugby on show was very high, with all the players showing a superb attitude both on and off the pitch. The final was a hotly contested match between Silverdale from Hastings, and St. Andrews from Brighton & Hove: with the score being 2-2 at the end of the match, a period of extra time had to be played, ending with Silverdale scoring a couple of tries to take the trophy with a 4-2 win.

The following 8 teams have all qualified to take part in the Regional Yazoo County Finals on June 22nd at Horsham RFC - Silverdale, St. Andrews, East Preston, English Martyrs, Barnham, Stonegate, Holy Trinity, and Balfour. Good luck to you all!!

May 19th 2010 – Yr 5/6 WSW Tag Rugby Tournament

WSW Tag Rugby Winners

On Wednesday May 19th, 2010, West Sussex West School Sport Partnership held their annual Yr 5/6 Tag Rugby Tournament. This event is the beginning of a National Tag Rugby competition sponsored by ‘Yazoo Milkshakes’ and it was held at Chichester RFC. Schools from across the SSP took part, refereed by RFU Community Rugby Coaches and students from Chichester University.

After some very entertaining Tag Rugby being played, in what was very hot and sunny weather, St. Richard’s school came out on top, winning the event. St. Richards’ defence was a key part of their success, only conceding 8 tries all afternoon. We must wish St.Richards and Barnham Primary School (Runners Up) every success, as they have now qualified through to the Sussex Tag Rugby Finals – Good Luck!!

Finally, there were many future Rugby stars on show during the Tournament, yet special mention must go to Isaac Hughes from St.Richards, as he was named ‘Player of the Tournament’ due to his electric pace and fast footwork.

Crawley Schools Tag Rugby Development Day

On 1st October 2009, Crawley School Sport Partnership and Crawley Rugby Club were joined by 11 Crawley Primary School teams for a Tag Rugby Development Festival at Crawley’s Willoughby Fields Ground.
The sunny day got off to a great start with all of the schools taking part in some expert coaching provided by the high quality coaches that were involved for the day. Students learned skills that were necessary for the game and given advice and tips which helped reinforce the rules of Tag.
After a break for lunch, the competition got underway and the teams were divided to compete in either a year 3/4 or year 5/6 competition. Teams were keen to show off their newly learned skills and games were exciting to watch. Referees did their best to keep games flowing, and the competitions saw a healthy number of tries scored.
The year 3/4 competition was close between the top three teams and Gossops Green A team were pushed into second place by a victorious Our Lady A team. The year 5/6 event was equally as close with three teams on similar points but it was Three Bridges Juniors who clinched the win over Gossops Green A team.
A great day was had by all, with each player who participated being awarded a certificate and goody bag provided by Crawley Rugby Club.
