SSRFUR Annual Review 2010 | ![]() |
The Sussex Society of Rugby Union Football Referees is a Corporate member of Sussex RFU. Through the South East Referees Federation they supply Referees at all levels to Clubs, and have a renowned training programme of development.
The Sussex Community Referees Group was formed by Sussex RFU in co-operation with the Referee Department at the RFU, the Sussex Society of Rugby Union Referees to cater for Referees attached to Clubs and Educational establishments who are not members of the Sussex Society
Since 1932, the Sussex Referees Society has been providing Match Officials in Sussex and elswhere. Roger Quittenton, who officiated at 20 Internationals, came up through the Sussex ranks, and several others have been promoted to the National Panel.
The Society now combines its appointments with the Kent Referees Society in the South East Federation, and works closely with Sussex Rugby Union, Sussex Schools and Sussex Clubs. Over recent years the Society has gained a well-deserved reputation for foward- thinking and innovation.
Much of the Society's work is concerned with Training and new members - male and female - especially those with no previous experience are welcomed. Courses are run regularly, followed by a full programme of mentoring and individual help and assessment.

Since Rugby began, there have always been those Club members who, whilst not wanting to Referee every week, are prepared to run out with the whistle at Club or School games. Usually ex-players, many are of high standard, but have never been formally trained.
The Community Referees Group was formed so that these vital individuals would be recognised and given support. Candidates will have to complete the ELRA (Entry-Level Referee Award) course, and have a CRB check. You will not be expected to travel nor is there a formal appointments system, although some will like to go to tournaments etc. The benefits include the new Sussex RFU Community Referees shirt, and RFU Law Book and Sussex RFU Handbook. By arrangement with the Sussex Referees Society you will also receive their Newsletter and RFU updates.
