Tour Meeting
Sussex U 16 Rugby Sunday November 29th 2009 Horsham RFC
Sussex had the chance to win
Sussex started this match optimistically, which was played in wet and windy conditions.
The opening exchanges were even for a short while. The match then favoured the better attacks of the visitors back division which began to penetrate the defence of the home backs which had several last minute changes... The defenders stopped several forays at the last minute from a strong midfield pairing.
Herts also used the strong following well with long positional kicks enabling them to often restart inside the Sussex 22 line. Eventually Herts crossed the Sussex line after 10 mins. Sussex forwards rekindled their efforts and after 25 mins produced an opportunity for Richards to snatch a well taken try under the posts. Webb converted to put Sussex into a 7-5 lead. As Sussex targeted a lead at half time, and looked towards the wind being behind them, a fatal lapse in defence allows a deadly score to be made by the visitors shortly before half time
Half time Sussex 7 Herts 10
With the wind behind, the anticipation was high, and indeed for a crucial period the home side had several periods of strong territorial advantage, but failed to nail down the scores when they had the chance. This side needs to be more vigorous in attack, and sharpen its defensive line. There were further periods of highly encouraging phases, but no scores made. Herts scored two further tries late in the game which somewhat flattered the differences between the teams, but all agreed they thoroughly deserved the win.
The coaches look forward to the next training session , and are convinced that there will be considerable improvement in the new year when the squad re-convenes

Under 16 match v Surrey at Crawley RFC Wed 11th November 2009
Sussex under 16 - 5pts Surrey U16- 29pts
Disappointing result in difficult conditions
The Under 16 team had mixed emotions after this floodlit match, playing the strongest side in the London Division. Sussex suffered several last minute withdrawals and started the match in anunseettled manner The conditions were difficult for open rugby, with a very sticky pitch and wet ball throughout, but overall, the Sussex side failed to deliver to its potential. The pace of the encounter was set by the visitors, who challenged the breakdown more vigorously than Sussex, and outside, showed more guile and better lines of attack. Nevertheless, credit must be given to the home side’s gritty determination, and the gradual domination by the pack over Surrey as the second half progressed. Sloppy defence allowed Surrey to score 3 well executed tries during a first half which they dominated.
Half time Surrey 15-Sussex 0
Soon after the break Sussex earned a splendid reward for consistent pressure from the forwards with Joe Woods securing the touchdown Despite this improvement, Sussex was unable to defend efficiently and Surrey finally found space to score 2 further tries. The spirit of the side remains excellent, and both coaches and players feel that standards will improve. A more aggressive attitude will add to the developing pattern, together with several technical adjustments

U16 v Middlesex A and B at Christ’s Hospital School Sunday 1st November
Sussex A beat Middlesex A 22 -20
A very pleasing victory!
The match started in appalling conditions with Middlesex having the far heavier pack, which caused considerable pressure to the home side throughout the game.
As the game developed, so did the Sussex confidence which enabled several talented players to rise to their expected standards.
Despite having to deal with poor quality ball from the scrummage, Sussex created a team try which was completed by Onke Nesi .
As the weather slowly subsided, so did the Sussex defence for a while, and this allowed the visitors to take the lead with two well taken tries.
However the Sussex forwards continued their battle to supply some quality ball, and first Hugh Richards and the Onke Nesi again,
crossed the Middlesex line to set up an exciting final period. Middlesex had the opportunity to draw level at the final whistle,
but missed the conversion to give Sussex a very well earned victory, overturning last years defeat at Worthing.
Team spirit is excellent and must continue if we are to show our rugby at its best. .
This was most encouraging step up from the previous match against Hampshire and we look forward to a very tough match against Surrey
on Wed 11th November at Crawley RFC.

Sussex B beat Middlesex B 20-10
An excellent match which saw the team pass, from a dreadful start, to a sustained improvement as the match progressed.
Playing uphill in foul conditions, the team eventually found a cohesive pattern and overturned the 0-7 deficit taken by the Middlesex side.
At the interval it was all square at 10-10 .
Sussex then impressed the supporting masses with a great team performance in the second half.
Tries by Ned Holden and Jake Giles boosted morale and the defence held Middlesex in a most encouraging manner.
The final wound for the visitors was a delightfully taken drop goal by Ned Holden, of which Jonny Wilkinson would have been proud of .
Well played Sussex!!

Hampshire A v Sussex A played Sunday 25th October (Winchester RFC) Lost 32-12 This first match was lost in the first 20 mins, when poor defence and lack of application allowed the home side to score 3 unanswered tries. Subsequently Sussex began to focus ,became more confident and managed a splendid forward based try, finished by Joe Woods . Conversion by Giles Heythornthwaite . A second try by Nick de Brett gave hope of a possible victory , but it was a,false dawn , Hants finishing the match strongly with two further tries. The bottom line is that we showed glimpses of very good progress, but a fierce combatative approach is required from the first whistle .Work in progress Parents may like to purchase a dvd of this game, priced £5.00 from The Hampshire RFU through glen@ptgbluebird.co.uk All proceeds to Children in Need
Hampshire B v Sussex B Lost 25-12 A pleasing performance generally, but especially by the pack. They played with great determination and provided an encouraging supply of possession throughout the match . Sussex held the lead on two occasions but were finally overhalled during the latter stages . Tries were scored by Josh Groocock and Ned Holden, and Josh Williams converted magnificently from the touchline. Well played the B side.
